Dr. Robert M. Smith |
Dr. Smith was born and raised near Dayton, Ohio. He graduated salutatorian from Dayton Christian High School, where he played soccer and baseball. He went on to Wheaton College, a selective Christian liberal arts college in Illinois, where he studied psychology and pre-medicine and graduated cum laude with a B.A.. Intramural sports such as soccer, football, basketball, ultimate Frisbee and softball kept him busy, as well as volunteering to run a Boy’s Club every Saturday in inner-city Chicago. Dr. Smith also met his wife, Dawn, who introduced him to chiropractic.
Dr. Smith had suffered from migraine headaches since the age of twelve, which at times were so bad that he would lay in a dark, quiet room and eventually vomit from the pain. His solution was simply to take medication and hope the pain passed quickly. His girlfriend at the time (who eventually became his bride) convinced him to visit a chiropractor. Dr. Smith found the treatment so effective that he was willing to work a couple of more hours at his part-time job to pay for weekly treatments! Dr. Smith was amazed to see his headache frequency go from twice a week, to once a month.
After graduating from college, Dr. Smith took a break from schooling for two years. He managed a group home for developmentally disabled children during his two years off and enjoyed the experience of helping the kids as well as managing 20 staff. He applied for and was accepted to medical school, but also made a decision to apply to chiropractic school. He felt that he would enjoy a career of helping people naturally, without the schooling and stresses of the medical field.
Dr. Smith took to his studies at the National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, Illinois, with relish. He spent hours studying “above and beyond” class subjects as well as working for two chiropractors and working as a teaching assistant in anatomy, neuroanatomy, and adjusting technique. Dr. Smith even had a paper published in a professional journal and got married while he was there! He graduated summa cum laude, valedictorian.
Dr. Smith and his wife moved to the Lehigh Valley in 1998 to be closer to her family. Chiropractic Whole Health opened in September 1999; its first location was a small office at 2222 Sullivan Trail. By 2004, this office was too small and the practice was relocated to its current location at 3413 Sullivan Trail. Some notable changes have been the addition of a second massage therapist in 2004 (Don), an Insurance Manager (Ann) in 2007, and an Office Manager (Robin) in 2010.
Dr. Smith loves being with his family most of all! The children are homeschooled and like to do activities together. The family is also involved in church activities at Calvary Baptist, where they’ve been members since 1999. In his free time, Dr. Smith likes to follow sports (The Buckeyes, Reds, Browns, Cavs and Eagles), politics (although this topic is kept to a minimum at work!), play guitar and be outside (gardening, hiking, biking and swimming are favorites).
